By Bishop Terrie Riley – In my last blog posting, we looked at how energy can change just by becoming conscious of it.  Now get ready to look at what happens when we apply attention and awareness to an event that has already happened…

Imagine you’re sitting quietly, watching ripples on a pond. You toss a pebble, and the waves spread out, beautiful, mysterious, full of possibility. Now imagine that the universe itself is like that pond, and your consciousness or awareness is the pebble. This is the heart of the quantum eraser experiment, a scientific story that feels like a spiritual teaching.

The Magic of Observation

In an earlier blog I discussed that scientists once found that light acts as if it has infinite possibilities, like a wave, until someone looks at it. The moment it’s observed, it chooses a single path. It’s almost as if the universe waits for our attention before making a decision.

A Practical Example: Meditation and Intention

Think about meditation. When you sit in stillness, your mind is open, full of potential. The moment you focus your intention, on peace, healing, or gratitude, something shifts. The possibilities narrow, and your experience becomes real. The quantum eraser experiment suggests that the universe works in a similar way: awareness shapes reality.

The Quantum Eraser: Changing the Past with Present Awareness

Now, let’s stretch this idea even further. In the quantum eraser experiment, a particle passes through two slits and hits a screen. The event is “in the past.” But scientists discovered that if they erase the information about which slit the particle went through, even after the fact, the pattern changes. The universe seems to rewrite its own history based on what is known in the present.

Now apply this by imagining you made a choice yesterday, and today you have a new understanding about it. Just as scientists found that erasing information about a particle’s path changes the outcome, your present awareness can reshape how you feel about past events. The universe, like your mind, is flexible, ready to rewrite its story when you bring fresh insight.

Healing Old Wounds With the “Eraser”

Picture someone who feels weighed down by a mistake from years ago. One day, they decide to forgive themselves and see the event with compassion. Heaviness lifts, and the memory loses its power. Just as scientists can erase information and change the outcome in their experiment, we can use present awareness to transform how we experience our past.

What Can We Learn From Quantum Physics

  • Reality is not fixed until it is known. The universe doesn’t lock in an outcome until someone becomes aware of it. This echoes spiritual teachings that say consciousness is the true creator.
  • The past is flexible. What we call “the past” isn’t fully determined until the present moment of awareness. This aligns with mystical traditions that see time as fluid, not linear.
  • Consciousness is a participant, not a spectator. The universe responds to information, awareness, and intention. We are not just watching reality unfold, we are co-creating it.
  • Possibility is more fundamental than matter. Before observation, everything exists as potential. This matches spiritual views that reality is shaped by intention and attention.

Practical Application: Co-Authoring Your Life

  • Set an intention each morning. Just as observation shapes the outcome in quantum experiments, your intention can shape your day.
  • Practice mindful awareness. Notice how your attention changes your experience, at work, in relationships, in moments of challenge.
  • Rewrite your story. If a memory or belief feels heavy, bring new awareness to it. Like the quantum eraser, your present consciousness can transform the past.

Bridging Science and Spirit

While the quantum eraser experiment doesn’t prove that our minds magically create reality, it does show that what we know and observe truly matters. This idea connects science, meditation, and spiritual wisdom: reality is something we help shape. The universe is our partner, not just a stage for our lives.

Where does this lead?

I think it invites us to ask:

  • What is the relationship between consciousness and time?
  • Does awareness shape the unfolding of events?
  • Are we co-authors of reality, not just passive observers?

These are not just scientific questions, they are spiritual ones. The quantum eraser experiment opens the door for us to step inside and explore consciousness and intention.
